About Art & Sculpting

Commissioning a sculpture means paying an artist or fabricator to make a piece to your brief: a bust from photographs, a pet portrait, a memorial, a trophy, a statue for a garden or lobby, or a large artwork scaled up from an artist's maquette. On The Spool List you post a job for free with references, size, material, where the piece will stand and your budget. Verified makers send quotes, from hand sculptors in clay and stone to studios with 3D printers, CNC mills and casting setups. You choose a maker, pay the price they quote, and your payment is protected until you confirm the piece has been delivered.

Makers with verified machines

Makers whose machines for this kind of work have been verified on The Spool List. Location shown is the city or country the maker entered.

How to brief a maker

  1. Give the finished size, including the base, and where the piece will stand: indoors, outdoors, on a plinth or on a wall.
  2. Attach several reference images from different angles; for a likeness, include front, side and three-quarter views in even light.
  3. Name the material and finish you want, or describe the look and ask makers to suggest one.
  4. Say whether you need a single piece or an edition, and whether you want to approve a small model or render first.
  5. Mention weight limits, fixings or installation needs for large or outdoor work.
  6. Include your budget range and delivery country, since large pieces may need crating and freight.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to commission a sculpture?

The price depends on size, material, the level of detail and the hours of hand work. A small resin figure costs far less than a life-size bronze, which also involves mould making, a foundry and freight. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your brief with size, material and a budget range, and compare the quotes. You pay the price the maker quotes.

Can a sculptor make a piece from photos?

Yes. Portrait and pet sculptures are usually made from photographs. The more angles you supply, the closer the likeness: front, both sides, three-quarter views and the back of the head help. Some makers can also work from a 3D scan. Ask to approve progress photos or a digital render before the final piece is cast or finished.

Which material should I choose for my sculpture?

Bronze and stone are durable and suit outdoor work, but cost more and weigh more. Resin and Jesmonite are lighter and cheaper, and can be finished to look like metal or stone. Foam and fibreglass suit large, lightweight display pieces. Tell makers where the piece will live and how long it must last, and they can recommend a material.

What is the difference between a one-off and an edition?

A one-off is a single original piece. An edition is a set number of casts taken from a mould, often numbered and signed. Making moulds adds to the first cost, but each additional cast then costs less. Say in the job post whether you want one piece or several, so makers can quote correctly.

Do I own the copyright in a sculpture I commission?

Not automatically. In many countries the artist keeps the copyright unless it is transferred in writing, even though you own the physical piece. If you plan to reproduce the design, sell copies or use it in branding, agree the rights in the job thread before work begins, and check the rules where you live.

How is payment handled on a sculpture commission?

You pay the price the maker quotes when you accept it. Your payment is protected, and the maker is paid through Stripe only after you confirm the piece has been delivered. For large commissions, agree approval points, such as a maquette or render sign-off, in the job thread before work starts.
