About Glasswork

Custom glasswork covers stained-glass panels and windows, kiln-fused and slumped glass, blown vessels and lighting, cast glass and engraved or etched pieces. People commission it for windows and door panels, lamp shades, gifts, signage and art, and to repair or copy a damaged period panel. On The Spool List you post the job free with sizes, a design or reference images, colours and where the piece will go. Verified makers whose kilns and studio equipment are registered on the platform send quotes, and you can agree the design and glass choices in chat. You pick a maker, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.

How to brief a maker

  1. Give the exact size of the opening or piece, and measure window and door openings at more than one point.
  2. Attach a design, sketch or reference images, and say the colours and textures you want.
  3. Say where the piece will go (inside, outside, a door, a shower, a lamp) so the maker can choose suitable glass and support.
  4. For repairs, photograph the whole panel and the damage in daylight, front and back.
  5. Ask how the piece will be packed and shipped, or whether you will collect it.
  6. Check whether a glazier needs to fit the finished panel, and say who will install it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom stained-glass window cost?

Cost depends on size, how many pieces of glass the design uses, the type of glass and whether fitting is included. A public US cost guide puts custom stained-glass windows at roughly $250 to $600 per square foot. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your design and sizes and compare quotes.

Can a cracked stained-glass panel be repaired?

Often, yes. Single broken pieces can usually be replaced, and panels with sagging or failing lead can be re-leaded. Matching old or hand-made glass can be difficult. Post photos of the whole panel and the damage, and let makers say what they can do before you commit.

What is the difference between leaded and copper-foil stained glass?

In leaded work, pieces of glass are held in H-shaped lead channels called came, which suits windows and larger panels. In the copper-foil method, often linked with Tiffany lamps, each piece is wrapped in copper tape and soldered, which allows smaller pieces and finer detail. Makers choose the method that suits the design.

What is fused glass?

Fused glass is made by arranging pieces of glass and heating them in a kiln until they bond. It can then be slumped over a mould to make plates and bowls. The glass pieces must be compatible, meaning they expand and contract at the same rate, or the piece can crack as it cools.

Can I commission a hand-blown glass piece?

Yes. Glassblowers make vases, drinking glasses, ornaments and lighting at the furnace. Hand-blown pieces are made one at a time, so sizes and shapes in a set can vary slightly. Give the size, colour and quantity and add reference photos of shapes you like.

Can glass be engraved with a name or logo?

Yes. Common methods are sandblasting, acid etching, rotary engraving and laser marking. Each gives a slightly different frosted look and depth. Attach your artwork as a vector file and say the size and position you want, plus what the glass item is.
