About Jewellery Making
Custom jewellery is a piece designed and made for you rather than picked from a display case: an engagement ring, a signet ring with your initials, a pendant cast from a sketch, or new jewellery made from old gold. On The Spool List you post a job for free with your sketch, reference photos or CAD file, plus metal, stones, ring size and budget. Verified makers with registered equipment, from wax printers and casting setups to engraving lasers, send quotes. You choose a maker, pay the price they quote, and your payment is protected until you confirm the piece has arrived. Ready-made pieces are also sold in the Forge.

How to brief a maker
- Attach a sketch, reference photos or a CAD file, and say which details matter most to you.
- State the metal and purity (for example 925 silver or 18k gold) and any stones, with their size and whether you are supplying them.
- Give the ring size and the sizing system you used (US, UK, EU or inside diameter in millimetres).
- Say whether you want a CAD render to approve before casting.
- Include engraving text exactly as it should appear, with the font if you have one in mind.
- Add your delivery country, since insured shipping and any hallmarking rules vary by country.

Frequently asked questions
How much does custom jewellery cost?
It depends mostly on the metal, the stones, the design work and the hours of hand finishing. A simple silver ring costs far less than a gold ring with set diamonds. Public guides give ranges such as $300 upwards for a simple custom ring in the US, but makers on The Spool List set their own prices. Post your design and compare quotes; you pay the price the maker quotes.
Can a jeweller make a ring from my sketch?
Yes. Many jewellers turn sketches into a CAD model first, show you renders to approve, then print the model in castable wax or resin and cast it in your chosen metal. Put the sketch, the metal, the stone details and your ring size in the job post. If modelling is extra, the maker will quote for it.
What is lost-wax casting?
It is the traditional way to make most cast jewellery. A master is made in wax or castable resin, set in plaster-like investment, and burned out in a kiln to leave a cavity. Molten metal is poured or spun into the cavity. After cooling, the piece is cleaned, filed, set with stones and polished. It suits detailed, one-off and small-batch pieces.
Can I use my own gold or stones?
Often, yes. Some makers will reuse your old gold or reset stones from an heirloom, while others prefer to buy fresh metal so they can control the alloy. Say what you want to supply in the job post, with photos and any certificates for stones, so makers can confirm before quoting.
How do I find my ring size?
The most reliable way is to be measured by a jeweller with ring sizers. At home, you can measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits the right finger and give it in millimetres. Sizing systems differ between countries, so always say which system you are using. Wide bands usually need a slightly larger size.
How is payment handled on a custom jewellery order?
You pay the price the maker quotes when you accept it. Your payment is protected, and the maker is paid through Stripe only after you confirm the piece has been delivered. Agree on approval steps, such as a CAD render or wax sign-off, in the job thread before work starts.
