About Leather Craft

Custom leather craft is the making and repair of goods from leather: wallets, belts, bags, straps, cases, holsters, patches and branded items. People commission it when they want a specific size, colour, stitching or personalisation, when they need a matching replacement, or when a business wants small runs with its logo. On The Spool List you post the job free with measurements, reference photos, the leather and colour you want and any branding. Verified makers with their equipment registered on the platform send quotes, and you can chat with them about leather choice and stitching first. You pick a maker, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.

How to brief a maker

  1. Give exact sizes: belt length measured to your usual hole, strap lug width, or the dimensions of what the case must hold.
  2. Say which leather and colour you want, or describe the look (rugged, smooth, soft) so the maker can suggest one.
  3. Choose thread colour and stitching style, and say whether you want visible hand stitching.
  4. For logos or names, attach a vector file (SVG, PDF or AI) and say whether you want embossing, stamping or laser marking.
  5. For items that must fit something (a knife, tool, camera or phone), give the model and measurements, or offer to send it.
  6. For repairs, send photos of the whole item and the damaged area.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between full-grain and top-grain leather?

Full-grain leather keeps the complete outer surface of the hide, so it shows natural marks and develops a patina with use. Top-grain leather has had the surface sanded or corrected, which gives a more uniform look. Both are used for good leather goods; ask makers which they use and why it suits your item.

What is saddle stitching?

Saddle stitching is a hand-sewing method where two needles pass through each hole from opposite sides. If one stitch breaks, the seam tends to stay together, which is why it is often used on wallets, belts and bags. Machine stitching is faster and common in larger runs. Say in your brief if you want hand stitching.

Can I get a logo or name added to leather?

Yes. Common options are hot-stamping or embossing with a custom die, hand stamping, and laser engraving. Custom dies add a one-off cost that makes more sense for repeat orders. Attach your artwork as a vector file and say the size and position you want.

Can you order custom leather goods in bulk for a business?

Yes. You can post a job for a small batch, such as branded keyrings, patches or card holders for staff, clients or events. Give the quantity, the branding details and your deadline, and ask makers to quote price breaks for different quantities.

Can leather bags, belts and straps be repaired?

Many can. Common repairs include re-stitching seams, replacing straps or buckles, fixing edges and making a new part to match. Colour matching older leather can be difficult, so post clear photos in daylight and let the maker say what is possible before you commit.

Can I buy ready-made leather goods on The Spool List?

Yes. Makers can list finished items in the Forge, The Spool List's shop for ready-made pieces. Browse there, or post a job if you need a custom size, colour or personalisation. Ready-made pieces suit gifts and standard items, while a job post suits anything that has to fit a particular size or carry a name or logo.
