About Embroidery

Custom embroidery stitches a logo, name or artwork into fabric with thread, which gives a raised, hard-wearing finish that suits workwear, team kit, caps, bags and patches. Before stitching, artwork is digitised: turned into a stitch file that tells the machine where each stitch goes. Businesses use embroidery for uniforms and merchandise, clubs for badges and kit, and individuals for personalised gifts or to customise their own clothes. On The Spool List you post the job free with your artwork, garment, placement, size and quantity. Verified makers whose embroidery machines are registered on the platform send quotes. You choose one, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.

Makers with verified machines

Makers whose machines for this kind of work have been verified on The Spool List. Location shown is the city or country the maker entered.

How to brief a maker

  1. Upload the logo as a vector file (AI, SVG, PDF or EPS) or a high-resolution PNG, and ask whether digitising is included in the quote or charged separately.
  2. Name the garment (brand, style, colour, sizes) or say you will supply your own.
  3. Give the placement and stitch size, for example left chest 9 cm wide or cap front 5 cm tall.
  4. List thread colours or Pantone references if colour matching matters.
  5. State the quantity broken down by size and colour.
  6. For patches, give the shape, size, edge type and backing (sew-on, iron-on, hook and loop).

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom embroidery cost?

The price depends mainly on the stitch count, which grows with design size and detail. The garment, the number of placements and the quantity also count. Digitising is often a one-off charge per design. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your artwork, garment and quantity and compare quotes. You pay the price the maker quotes.

What is embroidery digitising and why is it needed?

Embroidery machines cannot read a normal image. Digitising turns your artwork into a stitch file (for example DST or PES) that sets stitch types, directions and colour order. Good digitising makes the design look clean on fabric. It is usually done once per design, and the file can be reused for later orders.

Can I order embroidery with no minimum quantity?

Some makers take single pieces, such as a name on a jacket, while others prefer runs. Minimums vary by maker, so put your exact quantity in the job post and makers who take that size of order can quote. For a single piece, the digitising charge can make up a large part of the price.

Can you embroider on clothes I already own?

Often, yes. Many makers embroider on items that customers supply. Describe the item and fabric in your job post, since very stretchy, thin or padded items can be harder to stitch. Agree with the maker how the item will be sent and returned before you ship it.

What is 3D puff embroidery?

3D puff embroidery stitches over a layer of foam so the design stands out from the fabric. It is popular on cap fronts. It suits bold shapes and lettering rather than fine detail or very small text. Ask makers whether your design will work in puff before you order.

Embroidery or printing: which is better for my logo?

Embroidery is textured and hard-wearing and suits caps, workwear, bags and heavier fabrics. It struggles with very fine detail, gradients and photos. Printing handles full-colour and detailed artwork and suits large designs on T-shirts. If you are unsure, post the artwork and ask makers what they recommend.
