About Signage & Displays

Custom signage covers anything made to show a name, logo or message: shopfront signs, 3D logo letters for a reception wall, LED neon, lightboxes, acrylic and wooden signs, menu boards and point-of-sale displays. On The Spool List you post a job for free with your logo file, size, material, indoor or outdoor use and whether you need lighting. Verified makers send quotes, from laser and CNC shops to sign printers and LED fabricators. You choose a maker, pay the price they quote, and your payment is protected until you confirm your sign has been delivered. Installation and permits depend on your location, so say in the job post what you need.

How to brief a maker

  1. Attach your logo as a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF) so makers can cut and print it cleanly.
  2. Give the finished width and height, and a photo of the wall or frontage with its measurements.
  3. Say whether the sign is for indoors or outdoors, and whether it needs lighting and a plug or hard-wired supply.
  4. Name materials and colours, or share a reference image of the look you want.
  5. Say whether you need mounting hardware, installation, or only the sign delivered.
  6. Check local planning or permit rules for exterior and illuminated signs, and mention your delivery country.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom business sign cost?

It depends on size, materials, lighting and whether installation is included. A US home-improvement price guide puts window signs at roughly $100–1,000 and channel letter signs at $2,000–20,000 or more, installed. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your size, material and logo file, and compare quotes. You pay the price the maker quotes.

What file do sign makers need for my logo?

A vector file is best: SVG, AI, EPS or a vector PDF. Vectors keep sharp edges at any size and can go straight to laser cutters, CNC routers and vinyl cutters. A JPG or PNG can work for printed signs if it has a high enough resolution. If you only have a low-quality image, ask whether the maker offers redrawing.

Should I choose LED neon or glass neon?

LED neon is flexible tubing lit by LEDs. It is lighter, runs at low voltage and is less fragile to ship. Glass neon is hand-bent glass filled with gas, with a traditional glow, but it needs high-voltage transformers and specialist makers. For most interior logos and wall art, LED neon is the more practical choice.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor sign?

In many places, yes. Exterior signs, especially illuminated or projecting ones, are often covered by local planning, building or electrical rules, and some landlords have their own requirements. Rules differ widely between countries and cities, so check with your local authority before ordering, and share any size or lighting limits with makers.

Can I get a sign made without installation?

Yes. Many buyers order the sign with mounting hardware and fit it themselves or use a local installer. Say in the job post whether you want delivery only, a mounting kit, or installation. Illuminated signs that must be hard-wired should be connected by a qualified electrician where you are.

How is payment handled on a sign order?

You pay the price the maker quotes when you accept it. Your payment is protected, and the maker is paid through Stripe only after you confirm the sign has been delivered. Approve a proof or mock-up of the layout in the job thread before production starts.
