About Metal Fabrication & Welding

Metal fabrication means cutting, bending and joining steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other metals into finished parts and structures. It covers everything from a single bracket or a broken trailer hitch to gates, railings, frames and enclosures. People use it for repairs, custom builds, vehicle projects and small production runs. On The Spool List you post the job free with a drawing, photos or measurements, the metal, the finish and the quantity. Verified makers whose metalworking equipment is registered on the platform send quotes, and you can chat with them about design and finish first. You pick a maker, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.

Typical jobs

How to brief a maker

  1. Attach a drawing, sketch or photos with key dimensions, hole positions and material thickness.
  2. Name the metal (mild steel, stainless, aluminium) or describe where the part will be used so the maker can advise.
  3. Say what finish you need: bare, painted, powder coated or galvanised, and whether it will live outdoors.
  4. For repairs, show the break clearly and say what the part does and what load it carries.
  5. Give the quantity, and say whether the maker needs to collect, deliver or install.
  6. Mention any rules you must meet, such as building regulations for railings, so the maker can quote correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does welding cost?

Cost depends on the metal, the welding method, how long the job takes and whether the welder comes to you. Public US cost guides list typical hourly rates of about $60 to $125 and small home projects in the hundreds of dollars. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your job with photos and compare quotes.

What is the difference between MIG and TIG welding?

MIG welding feeds a wire through a gun and is fast, which suits steel fabrication and repairs. TIG welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler rod; it is slower but gives fine control and neat welds, and is widely used on stainless steel and aluminium. The maker will choose the method that suits your part.

Can aluminium be welded?

Yes, but it needs the right equipment and skill. Aluminium conducts heat quickly and forms an oxide layer, so it is usually TIG welded or MIG welded with suitable equipment and settings. Cast aluminium can be harder to repair than sheet or extrusion. Say in your brief what the part is and add photos so makers can judge whether they can take it on.

Can I get a small one-off metal job done?

Yes. Many makers take one-off jobs such as a single bracket, a repair or a custom frame. Small jobs often carry a minimum charge because of setup time, so it can help to group several small pieces into one post.

What is the difference between powder coating and painting?

Powder coating applies a dry powder that is baked on in an oven, giving a thick, even and hard-wearing finish. Wet paint can be applied without an oven and is easier to touch up, but is usually less durable. For outdoor steel, galvanising before painting or powder coating adds rust protection. Say in your brief where the part will be used.

Can a maker fabricate structural or safety-critical parts?

Parts that carry people or heavy loads, such as structural steel, lifting gear or vehicle suspension, may need engineering calculations, certified welders or inspections under local rules. Say clearly in your brief if a part is load-bearing, and check the maker's qualifications and your local requirements before you commit.
