About 3D Printing
A 3D printing service turns a digital model into a physical object, layer by layer, without you owning a printer. Inventors use it for prototypes, hobbyists for miniatures and cosplay props, homeowners for replacement clips and brackets, and small businesses for short runs. On The Spool List you post a job for free with your file (STL, 3MF, STEP or OBJ), photos or a description, plus material, colour and quantity. Verified makers whose printers are registered on the platform send quotes. You choose a maker, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm your print has arrived. No file yet? Say so in the post, because many makers also offer modelling.

How to brief a maker
- Attach the file (STL, 3MF, STEP or OBJ) and check its units, since a model exported in inches but read as millimetres prints 25 times too small.
- Say what the part is for (display, functional, outdoor, food-adjacent, heat-exposed) so makers can suggest the right material.
- Give the critical dimensions and tolerances, especially for parts that must fit onto something else.
- State quantity, colour and finish: raw, supports removed, sanded, primed or painted.
- If you have no file, add clear photos with a ruler in shot and ask whether the maker offers modelling.
- Include your delivery country so makers can quote shipping accurately.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to get something 3D printed?
It depends on the size of the part, the material, the print time, the finish and how many you need. A small PLA part is usually cheap, while large resin prints or engineering materials cost more. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your file with the material and quantity and compare the quotes. You pay the price the maker quotes.
Where can I get something 3D printed if I don't own a printer?
Post a job on The Spool List with your file or photos. Verified makers who have registered their printers on the platform can quote on it. You can compare makers by their machines, materials and portfolios before choosing one, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.
What file do I need for 3D printing?
STL is the most common format. 3MF, OBJ and STEP also work, and STEP is useful for engineering parts because it keeps exact geometry. If you only have a sketch, photos or a broken original, say so in the job post. Some makers offer 3D modelling as part of the job and will quote for it separately.
Which material should I choose: PLA, PETG, ABS or resin?
PLA is easy to print and suits display pieces and prototypes but softens with heat. PETG is tougher and handles moisture better. ABS and ASA cope with more heat, and ASA is better outdoors. Resin gives very fine detail for miniatures and jewellery masters but is more brittle. Describe how the part will be used and makers can recommend a material.
Can a 3D print be as strong as the original part?
Sometimes. Strength depends on the material, the infill, the wall thickness and the direction the part is printed in, because FDM parts are weakest between layers. Nylon, carbon-fibre-filled filaments and thicker walls help. Parts for safety-critical or load-bearing uses should not be 3D printed without proper engineering sign-off.
Can I order a small batch rather than a single print?
Yes. Put the quantity in your job post. Makers with several printers, or with SLS or resin farms, can quote for batches. The price per part often falls as the quantity rises, because setup and file preparation are shared across the batch.
