About Ceramics & Pottery

Custom ceramics and pottery means clay pieces made to your brief: thrown on the wheel, hand-built or slip-cast in moulds, then glazed and fired in a kiln. People commission mugs, dinnerware, planters, vases, tiles and sculptural pieces, and cafés, restaurants and brands order small batches with a particular glaze or logo. On The Spool List you post the job free with sizes, quantities, reference photos, colours and how the pieces will be used. Verified makers whose equipment is registered on the platform send quotes, and you can agree clay, glaze and samples in chat. You pick a maker, pay the quoted price, and your payment is protected until you confirm delivery.

Makers with verified machines

Makers whose machines for this kind of work have been verified on The Spool List. Location shown is the city or country the maker entered.

How to brief a maker

  1. Give the size of each piece (height, diameter or capacity) and how many you need, plus a few spares for breakage.
  2. Say how the pieces will be used: for food and drink, dishwasher or microwave use, or indoors versus outdoors.
  3. Attach reference photos for shape and glaze colour, and accept that handmade glazes vary from piece to piece.
  4. For logos, attach a vector file and say whether you want it stamped, carved, painted or applied as a decal.
  5. For a larger run, ask for a sample piece first and agree the colour before the full order.
  6. Say how the pieces should be packed and shipped, since ceramics need careful packing.

Frequently asked questions

Is handmade pottery food safe?

It can be, but it depends on the clay, the glaze and how it is fired. Glazes for food and drink should be made for that use and fired to the right temperature, and some decorative glazes are not suitable. Tell makers in your brief that the pieces will hold food or drink and ask which glazes and firing they use.

What is the difference between stoneware, porcelain and earthenware?

They are different clay bodies fired at different temperatures. Earthenware is fired lower and stays more porous, so it relies on its glaze. Stoneware is fired higher and is dense and durable, which suits everyday tableware. Porcelain is also fired high and can be thin, white and translucent. Makers can advise which suits your pieces.

How much does a pottery commission cost?

Price depends on the number of pieces, their size, the making method, the glaze and any decoration or logo. Handmade pieces take time to throw, trim, dry, glaze and fire, and every set needs spares for pieces that fail in the kiln. Makers on The Spool List set their own prices, so post your job and compare quotes.

Can I get custom mugs with my logo?

Yes. Logos can be stamped into the clay, carved, painted with underglaze, or applied as a ceramic decal that is fired on. Each method gives a different look and suits different quantities. Attach your logo as a vector file and say how many mugs you need.

Can a potter make an exact matching set?

Handmade pieces are made to consistent sizes, but small differences in shape and glaze are normal and part of the character of the work. If you need very close matching over a large run, slip casting from a mould gives more consistent shapes. Ask makers to show examples of past sets.

Is handmade pottery dishwasher and microwave safe?

Many stoneware and porcelain pieces are, but not all. Metallic lustres and some glazes can be damaged by dishwashers or are unsuitable for microwaves. Say in your brief how the pieces will be used and cleaned, and ask the maker to confirm care instructions for the clay and glaze they choose.
