Xometry alternative for small jobs: Xometry vs a local maker marketplace
Buyers pay no fee. Payment is held by our payment partner until you confirm delivery.
Side by side
| Xometry | The Spool List | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get a price | Upload a CAD file to the Instant Quoting Engine; some parts are sent to manual quoting | Post the job free; verified makers send quotes; you choose one |
| What you need to start | A 3D file: solid formats such as STEP for any process, mesh files (STL, 3MF) for 3D printing only; a drawing for tolerances | Files if you have them; photos, measurements or a description also work |
| Who makes the part | A partner shop from Xometry's supplier network | An independent maker whose machine for that kind of work has been verified |
| Minimum order | US site: "no minimums required"; Europe: at least €30 per order | None |
| Buyer fee | None stated; EU site: "the quoted price you see is what you pay" | None; you pay the maker's quote |
| When you pay | Europe: upfront, production starts once payment is received; approved business buyers can pay by purchase order on credit terms | Upfront; held by our payment partner (Stripe) until you confirm delivery |
| Certifications | ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, AS9100D, IATF 16949; ITAR registered | None at platform level; ask the maker about their own |
| Disciplines | CNC, sheet metal, 3D printing, injection moulding, casting and more | 17, from CNC and 3D printing to woodworking, leather, embroidery and ceramics |
| Turnaround | Published expedite lead times by process, e.g. CNC machining 3–4 business days (varies with the part) | Set by each maker in their quote |
When Xometry is the better choice
Choose Xometry when the part needs paperwork: certifications, inspection reports, ITAR handling or a production quantity.
Xometry lists ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, AS9100D and IATF 16949 certifications and ITAR registration, and offers inspection upgrades such as CMM inspection with a dimensional report and first article inspection to AS9102 (Xometry FAQ). If a part is going into an aircraft, a medical device or a car, that matters more than anything on this page.
It's also built for volume. Its European help centre says projects above €7,000 per line item or above 1,000 pieces are reviewed manually (Xometry Europe), and the US homepage advertises on-demand capacity "with no minimums required" (Xometry). If you have a clean STEP file and need 200 brackets with a certificate of conformance, start there.
Where a small job gets awkward
Instant quoting prices geometry, so it needs a usable 3D file. Many small jobs don't start with one.
Xometry quotes from uploaded files. Mesh files such as STL can only be quoted for 3D printing, assemblies have to be uploaded part by part, and tolerances held in model data need a separate drawing (Xometry Europe). That's routine for an engineer. It's a wall if what you have is a cracked knob, a photo of a bracket, or a sketch on paper.
Small jobs also tend to need a conversation: matching an old part, deciding between aluminium and printed nylon, or asking for a finish. On a maker marketplace you message the maker before you pay, so those questions get answered in the quote.
How a small job works on The Spool List
You post the job free, verified makers quote, and you pay the quote you choose with no buyer fee.
Describe the part, add files or photos, and set a budget and deadline. Makers whose machines can do the work send quotes, and you talk to them directly. Each maker's machines are verified individually, so a CNC quote comes from someone with a verified CNC machine.
Payment is taken upfront and held by our payment partner, Stripe, until you confirm delivery. If something goes wrong, you raise it in the in-app dispute tool before confirming delivery (returns and disputes). Makers pay the commission, not you: 10% on the free plan, 7%, 5% or 4% on paid plans (pricing).
Frequently asked questions
Does Xometry have a minimum order?
Its European site says an order must be worth at least €30. Its US homepage advertises "no minimums required"; we didn't find a stated US minimum order value.
Can I get a Xometry quote without a CAD file?
Xometry's quoting works from uploaded files, and its help centre describes which file types each process needs. If you only have the broken original or photos, a maker who can measure the part and model it is the simpler route.
Is a maker marketplace cheaper than Xometry?
It depends on the part, material, quantity and shipping. The only reliable way to know is to get quotes for the same job from both.
Can I get ITAR or certified parts on The Spool List?
No. The Spool List doesn't hold manufacturing certifications or ITAR registration at platform level. For controlled or certified work, use a registered supplier such as Xometry.
How is my payment protected on The Spool List?
You pay upfront, and the payment is held by our payment partner, Stripe, until you confirm delivery. Problems are raised through the in-app dispute tool before you confirm.
