Etsy vs commissioning a cosplay maker: ready-made, custom order or a brief to many makers

Short answerIf an Etsy shop already sells the costume or prop you want, or makes something close in a style you like, buying it there or asking that shop for a custom order is simple and covered by Etsy's Purchase Protection. If you want a costume made to your measurements from a full brief, or you want several makers to quote and suggest how to build it, posting the job on The Spool List fits better.

When Etsy is the better choice

Use Etsy when the piece already exists as a listing, or a shop's own style is what you want.

For a ready-made prop, accessory or costume in standard sizes, a listing is the fastest route. For a tweak, use "Request Custom Order" or "Message seller"; if the seller can make it, they may publish a private listing for you to buy (Etsy help).

Etsy's Purchase Protection gives a full refund if an eligible item isn't delivered, arrives damaged, isn't as described, or arrives 7 or more days late; you can open a case after the estimated delivery date has passed and 48 hours after asking the seller for help (Etsy help). For a custom piece, "as described" is what you agreed in messages, so write it down.

Where a cosplay commission gets harder on Etsy

Measurement-led, multi-part costumes need a brief and a conversation, and Etsy is built around one shop at a time.

A full costume with armour, a prop and a wig may involve sewing, foam work and 3D printing. On Etsy you'd message shops one by one. Etsy's creativity standards also say items made with computerised tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters "must be produced based on a seller's original design" (Etsy), so a shop may not print a model you bring.

Character designs belong to their rights holders on any platform. Etsy says sellers are responsible for having the necessary rights to their content and removes material reported for infringement (Etsy IP policy). Commissioning a personal costume from a maker is common in cosplay, but neither platform changes who owns the character.

How a cosplay commission works on The Spool List

Post the brief once, makers quote, and you pay the quote you choose with no buyer fee.

Describe the character and version, attach references and measurements, list the pieces, and set a budget and the date you need it. Makers with the right skills quote, and you message them before accepting. See the cosplay market for typical jobs and how to brief a maker.

Payment is taken upfront through Stripe and protected until you confirm delivery; you raise any problem in the app before confirming (returns and disputes). Makers pay the commission: 10% on the free plan, or 7%, 5% or 4% on paid plans (pricing). Etsy's seller fees are on its fees page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I commission a custom cosplay costume on Etsy?

Yes, by messaging a shop or using Request Custom Order. If the seller can make it, they may publish a private listing for you to buy.

Does Etsy protect custom orders?

Etsy's Purchase Protection covers eligible orders that aren't delivered, arrive damaged or aren't as described. For custom work, keep a written record of what you agreed.

Is it legal to commission a costume of a copyrighted character?

Character designs belong to their rights holders on every platform. Personal costume commissions are common in cosplay, but rules vary by country; if in doubt, get advice.

Do buyers pay a fee on either platform?

Etsy's fee page lists no buyer service fee, though taxes may be added. On The Spool List, buyers pay no platform fee.
