When not to use The Spool List: if you already have a finished CAD file and want an instant price and checkout, or you need certified parts with inspection paperwork, Craftcloud, Treatstock or Xometry fit better, because on The Spool List you wait for makers to bid.

How Craftcloud works

Craftcloud is good at one thing: you upload a 3D model, it shows you prices from a list of partner manufacturing services, and you check out once. Its homepage lists 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal and casting and moulding, and says there is "no minimum order" (homepage). Its advantages page lists 200+ materials and 31 3D printing technologies, and says the price breakdown is shown up front with "no hidden costs" at checkout (source).

Craftcloud's parent company is All3DP, the 3D printing publication (about). Keep that in mind if you're reading All3DP's own guides to 3D printing services.

Three details from its Terms of Contract (February 2021 version) are worth knowing before you order:

  • You contract with Craftcloud, and Craftcloud contracts separately with the supplier. You are not the print shop's customer.
  • A handling fee of up to 7% of the order value can apply if your model turns out to be unprintable, if you change the spec after ordering, or if you refuse delivery. Customs, duties and import taxes are your responsibility.
  • You have 7 days from delivery to report anomalies against the specification (terms).

Craftcloud has a strong Trustpilot profile: 4.5 from 3,203 reviews when we checked on 7 October 2026 (Trustpilot).

Treatstock

Treatstock is a marketplace of independent providers. You upload a CAD file and get instant offers for 3D printing, CNC machining, cutting and many other processes listed on its homepage, which also names "Buyer Protection" among its benefits (homepage). For instant quotes, a service fee is included in the price you pay (manufacturing fee), and providers pay a selling fee "not lower than $2.99 and doesn't exceed 25%" (selling fee).

A card payment is held pending for up to 8 days and captured once the provider accepts. Treatstock reserves the right to delay the provider's payment until you confirm acceptable quality. You have 7 days after confirmed delivery to raise a complaint on website orders (terms).

Best for: buyers with a file who want many competing offers, including non-printing processes.

Xometry

Xometry is an industrial manufacturing service. It quotes the part, routes it to a partner shop and stays your single vendor. It lists ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, AS9100D and IATF 16949 certifications and ITAR registration (FAQ). Its US site says "no minimums required" (homepage); in Europe, orders must be at least EUR 30 (EU FAQ).

Best for: engineering parts where certifications, paperwork and one accountable supplier matter more than price.

The Spool List

The Spool List works the other way round. You post the job for free, with files or just photos, a budget and a deadline. Independent makers send bids, you compare their profiles and reviews, and you pick one. Makers verify each machine with proof of ownership and sample output (homepage).

There's no buyer fee: you pay the maker's quoted price. Makers pay a commission of 10% on the free plan and 4–7% on paid plans (pricing). Payment protection: the maker is paid once the buyer confirms delivery. Disputes are handled by the platform, and reviews only come from completed orders.

Best for: one-offs, props, repairs and anything you can describe but haven't modelled yet.

Who should use which

  • You have a finished file and want manufacturing services compared instantly: stay with Craftcloud.
  • You have a file and want more independent providers: Treatstock.
  • You need certified parts and invoices for a company: Xometry.
  • You don't have a file, or you want to talk to the person making it: post a job on The Spool List.

FAQ

Who owns Craftcloud? All3DP. Craftcloud's about page names All3DP as its parent company.

Does Craftcloud charge a service fee? Its terms say fees to Craftcloud only apply as part of a transaction, some payment methods may carry their own fees, and a handling fee of up to 7% applies to unprintable models, post-order changes or refused delivery.

Can I get a quote without an STL file? Not on the instant-quote services, which price from geometry. On The Spool List you can post photos, sketches and measurements and let makers quote.

Who pays import duties? On Craftcloud, you do. On any cross-border order, assume duties are yours unless the seller says otherwise.

Which option is cheapest? It depends on the part, the material and where it ships from. Getting several quotes for the same job is the only reliable way to find out.
