The shipwreck's exposed iron fittings and fastenings including its cannons and anchors were salvaged contemporaneously with its wrecking and during the 1960s and 1970s by treasure hunters. *San Felipe* has a relatively intact ballast pile in comparison to other 1733 Plate Fleet shipwrecks.
