Clément ranks among the true French pioneers of the motorcycle; this specific model was produced around 1902. The engine features an automatic intake valve and an overhead exhaust valve. The large external flywheel doubles as a pulley for the direct drive—via a twisted leather belt—to the rear wheel. The seat tube incorporates an adjustable belt tensioner. A spray-type carburetor handles mixture metering, while a throttle valve is fitted in the intake manifold. Ignition is provided by a trembler coil and battery, neatly housed in a leather satchel. The tank features two filler caps: one for gasoline and the other for oil. It also contains a manual pump for injecting pressurized oil into the crankcase. The front brake consists of a rubber pad that presses against the tire, while the rear wheel is slowed by a rim brake. These machines were widespread in the early 20th century; some were sold as complete vehicles.
