This carving is located on the northern face of Rowtor Rocks, near Birchover, Derbyshire.
Recorded as prehistoric, the carving features a central cross dividing the design into four distinct quadrants, each containing a cupmark. Two heavily weathered concentric rings surround the cross, while the outer ring is decorated with a series of nine or ten interconnected, U-shaped grooves resembling the petals of a flower. A separate cup-and-ring motif is visible above the main design.
Interestingly, the carving can be viewed from an area of Rowtor Rocks that was extensively modified by Thomas Eyre during the 17th century and subsequently became something of a tourist attraction in later centuries. If prehistoric, the design is rather unusual for England, raising the intriguing question of whether it could instead be of a later date.
