Exhibition Label: Born in the Waxhaw Settlement, South Carolina
Exhibition Label: Beginning with the administration of George Washington and continuing through Benjamin Harrison’s administration, the United States gave peace medals to Native American leaders as symbols of diplomacy. They were typically manufactured at the U.S. Mint and featured a presidential portrait on one side; the image on the reverse side changed over time. This example, produced while Andrew Jackson was in office, includes an image of clasped hands with the inscription “peace and friendship.” A similar motif was used by every president until Millard Fillmore (1850–53).
