Recumbent 18th-century grave-stone in the northwest quadrant of Old St Brendan’s graveyard (OF035-012002-), in the historic town of Birr (OF035-012----), Co Offaly, marking the grave of Joseph James who died in 17?? aged 38/52 years old. Joseph James of Rathbeg (Black Bull, Sharavogue), Co. Offaly, was the second son of John James of Rathbeg (1696-1749) who was married to Isabella Russell, daughter of William Russell of Ballydavid, Littleton, Co. Tipperary. One of four memorial stones marking the graves of this family in St. Brendan’s graveyard. The James family originally came from Somersetshire and according to family tradition they were descended from Captain Thomas James (1593-1635), a Welsh sailor, navigator & explorer, who undertook, by command of Charles I., a voyage to discover the Northwest Passage which was believed at the time to be an ocean route around the top of North America to Asia.
