Joseph James of Rathbeg (Black Bull, Sharavogue), Co. Offaly, was the second son of John James of Rathbeg (1696-1749) who was married to Isabella Russell, daughter of William Russell of Ballydavid, Littleton, Co. Tipperary. One of four memorial stones marking the graves of this family in St. Brendan’s graveyard. The James family originally came from Somersetshire and according to family tradition they were descended from Captain Thomas James (1593-1635), a Welsh sailor, navigator & explorer, who undertook, by command of Charles I., a voyage to discover the Northwest Passage which was believed at the time to be an ocean route around the top of North America to Asia.
