How to commission a styled cosplay wig: fibre, heat, styling and care

Short answer: to commission a styled cosplay wig, send the stylist reference images from the front, back and sides, your head circumference, the base wig you own or want them to buy, and whether the style must hold up to a full convention day. Ask which fibre they'll use. A heat-friendly synthetic fibre can be restyled with careful heat, which matters for spikes, curls and gravity-defying styles. Plan for careful shipping, because styled wigs crush easily.

What does a wig stylist need from me?

  1. References: front, back, both sides and the top. Hair often looks different in each piece of official art, so say which one wins.
  2. Head circumference and any notes on your own hair, such as length or thickness, which affect how the wig sits.
  3. Base wig: a specific product you've bought, or let the stylist choose. Colour, length and whether it has a lace front all matter.
  4. Style: spikes, ponytails, braids, buns, hairline, fringe length. Point to the details that matter most.
  5. Use: photos only, or a long convention day? Gravity-defying styles may need a frame, foam or extra product to last.
  6. Add-ons: hair clips, ears, horns or headpieces to attach to or around the wig.
  7. Deadline and delivery country.

Why does the wig fibre matter?

Wigs are made from different fibres, and not all can be heat-styled. Heat-friendly synthetic fibre "can be altered using regulated heat", and one wig retailer recommends styling tools set between 135 and 150 °C (275–300 °F), warning that "too hot and your fiber will singe" (Wigs.com). Check the manufacturer's guidance for your exact wig, because fibres vary. Ask the stylist:

  • Which base wig and fibre they recommend for your style
  • Whether you can safely restyle or touch up the wig at home, and how
  • What products they use, and whether they'll wash out

How are styled wigs priced?

By time and materials: the base wig (or wefts added for volume), the hours of cutting, heat styling, spiking or braiding, any internal support, and careful packing. Very tall or sculpted styles take far longer than a trimmed fringe. We don't quote ranges here; send the same brief to several stylists and compare like for like.

How should a styled wig be shipped and stored?

Styled wigs crush in transit. Ask the stylist how they'll pack it, for example on a head form in a rigid box. When it arrives, store it on a head or stand away from heat and sun. Ask for care instructions specific to the products used.

How does a wig fit with the rest of the costume?

If you're also commissioning the costume or a helmet, tell each maker about the other pieces: a hood, headpiece or helmet changes how the wig should be styled. How to commission a cosplay costume covers the full costume brief, and what a cosplay costume costs explains pricing.

FAQ

Can every cosplay wig be heat styled? No. Only heat-friendly fibres can, within the manufacturer's temperature range. Check your wig's product information.

Should I buy the base wig or let the stylist choose? Either works. If you buy it, check the colour and length with the stylist first; if they choose, ask them to include it in the quote.

How do I keep a styled wig in shape? Store it on a head or stand away from heat and sun, and follow the stylist's care notes for the products used.

Will a spiked wig survive a convention day? It depends on the structure and products. Tell the stylist how long you'll wear it so they can reinforce the style.
