In Thiacloprid the ring system sets the overall shape: two rings (one 5-membered and one 6-membered), one of them aromatic. Altogether 26 bonds hold the model together (18 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 6 aromatic). Hand the model round and let students tally the engraved atoms: 10 C + 9 H + 1 Cl + 4 N + 1 S, 25 in total. Ask the class to locate the thioether linkage (C-S-C), the nitrile (cyano) group (-C#N), the pyridine-type ring nitrogen and the C-Cl bond and name each one.
