Which rings can the class see in Terephthaloyl chloride? The answer is one aromatic 6-membered ring, joined up by 16 bonds altogether (8 single, 2 double and 6 aromatic, drawn in Kekulé form). A five-minute warm-up: read the symbol on every sphere and write down the totals (8 C + 4 H + 2 Cl + 2 O = 16 atoms). On the printed model, students can point to the two C-Cl bonds.
