Lay Chloroform on the desk and search for a ring: there isn't one. Its 5 atoms hang together through 4 bonds (all of them single). Students work from the model back to the formula CHCl3: the symbol count is 1 C + 1 H + 3 Cl, or 5 atoms all told. Ask the class to locate the three C-Cl bonds and name each one.
Teachers: use it as a hands-on starter before drawing the structural formula on the board.
