Lay Methanol on the desk and search for a ring: there isn't one. Its 6 atoms hang together through 5 bonds (all of them single). How many atoms can the class find? The engraved spheres give 1 C + 4 H + 1 O, so the answer should be 6. Before any theory, let students hunt on the model for the hydroxyl group (-OH).
Teachers: print one per group and let students check the structure against the formula.
