Acetic Anhydride is a chain molecule with no ring: 12 bonds (10 single and 2 double) connect its 13 atoms. A five-minute warm-up: read the symbol on every sphere and write down the totals (4 C + 6 H + 3 O = 13 atoms). Spot-the-group challenge: can students find the acid anhydride group (-CO-O-CO-)? Use it when you teach the carbonyl group (C=O).
