Despite displaying competitive pace, the sole factory-backed entry retired late in the race due to a mechanical failure and subsequent accident.
Following the revival of the Bugatti brand by Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli in 1987, the company launched the EB110 GT in 1991, followed by the lighter and more powerful EB110 Super Sport (SS) in 1992. In early 1994, French media mogul Michel Hommell commissioned Bugatti to construct a racing variant of the EB110 SS to compete in the GT1 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Bugatti technicians developed the vehicle in just six weeks.
