1,2-Dichloroethane has no rings at all: its 8 atoms form an open chain held together by 7 bonds (all of them single). Counting task: 2 C + 4 H + 2 Cl gives 8 engraved spheres; can the class rebuild the formula C2H4Cl2 from the model alone? Ask the class to locate the two C-Cl bonds and name each one. It makes organohalogen compounds and carbon-halogen bonds easier to see.
