An acyclic molecule to start with: Water joins 3 atoms through 2 bonds (all of them single), and students will not find a ring. How many atoms can the class find? The engraved spheres give 2 H + 1 O, so the answer should be 3. Zero hydrogen-bond donors or acceptors (computed) make it a clear contrast case for intermolecular forces.
