Recumbent 18th-century gravestone in Old St. Brendan's Graveyard, Birr, Co. Offaly, marking the grave of Isabella James nee Russell, wife of John James (1696-1749) of Rathbeg (Black Bull/Sharavogue), Co. Offaly and daughter of William Russell of Ballydavid House, Littleton, Co. Tipperary. The grave-stone also marks the burial place of her two grand-children Joshua & Isabell Marshall who died in 1776. In 1761, Ms. Isabella James a spinster from Birr married Joseph Marshall a gentleman from the town of Birr. In 1785, Joseph Marshall, a goldsmith was recorded as living in Castle Street, Birr. The Russell family appear to have been resident at Ballydavid from the early 18th century as Debretts ‘’Baronetage of England’’ recorded that Sir John Kingston James of Dublin, a grandson of John James of Rathbeg, King’s County (died 1729) and his wife, Isabella, daughter of William Russell of Ballydavid, county Tipperary.
