Recumbent 18th-century grave-stone in Old St Brendan’s graveyard (OF035-012002-), Birr, Co Offaly, marking the grave of John James who died on the 4th of January in 1797 aged 70. John James (1727-97) of Rathbeg (Black Bull, Sharavogue), Co. Offaly, was the son of John James of Rathbeg (1696-1749) & Isabella Russell, daughter of William Russell of Ballydavid, Littleton, Co. Tipperary. John was married to Margaret Spunner, daughter of William Spunner (died 1754) of Loughkeen, Co. Tipperary. One of 4 grave-stones of this family in this graveyard. The James family came from Somersetshire and according to family tradition they were descended from Captain Thomas James (1593-1635), a Welsh sailor, navigator & explorer, who undertook, by command of Charles I., a voyage to discover the Northwest Passage which was believed at the time to be an ocean route around the top of North America to Asia, which may have inspired the Coleridge poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
